On the 3rd of December 2011, Madison Square Garden in New York will host the fight between Antonio Margarito and Miguel Cotto for the Super Welterweight WBA World Championship.  Last time these two fighters met, Miguel Cotto sustained some serious injuries.

The first match between Cotto and Margarito was the first loss in Cotto’s career as a Welterweight fighter.  Although he fought very well, Margarito was incredibly defensive and managed to wear Cotto down.  In the seventh round, Margarito managed to get Cotto pinned up against the ropes and caused quite a serious nose bleed.  Cotto kept going and sustained even more injuries in the tenth round.  In the eleventh round, Margarito threw a series of heavy punches and Cotto was against the ropes, bleeding quite heavily.  Finally, Evangelista Cotto threw in the towel to stop the fight.  To this day, Cotto claims that the only reason Margarito was able to defeat him was because he cheated by using plaster on his gloves, something he has previously been convicted of, causing a one year ban.  In Cotto’s case, however, this was never proven, but you can see why Cotto is desperate to win the fight on the 3rd of December, to take back his place as champion.

Cotto is actually quite well known for bleeding profusely during boxing matches.  In 2009, for example, he fought Joshua Clottey and sustained a laceration over his eye following an accidental head clash.  This injury caused him to be unable to see certain blows coming.

Boxing is, of course, a brutal sport and injuries to the face, head and bones are very likely.  This is why many medical federations are calling for a ban on boxing, because injuries that appear insignificant on the surface – even though they can bleed quite badly – can be life threatening on the inside.

Watch Cotto vs Margarito and see if the rematch will finish in a similar bloodbath as the first battle!
